Default help with internet explorer 8?

so atm im using safari as my browser, and i love it. but i have certain software that relies on ie. i have ie8, and whenever i open it it says 'internet explorer cannot display the page' with a button that says 'diagnose connection problems'. there is nothing wrong with my connection but ie8 jut wont connect? im using a bt home hub, and all other browsers seem to work fine. the computer is linked up to the hub and internet explorer works on that (though the computer is XP and the laptop im using is vista). so ive tried uninstalling ie8 using a method i found on the microsoft website, and it keeps coming up with 'an error has occurred not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled. can anyone tell me how i can get my ie8 to connect/work? or whats happening when i try to uninstall it?
