Default Are there any other comparable programs like Microsoft Office's Word?

I recently bought a laptop that came with a free 60 day trial of Microsoft Office 2007 (Student)~ I loved having it, but my funds are really limited right now, and I don't have the $200 to buy it now that the trial is over. I thought my laptop would retain a more basic, bare bones version of Word at least, but it doesn't~ there's no program whatsoever for basic writing purposes.
I was wondering if there were any other companies who offered similar types of programs? i've never heard of any, but I've always used word, in every office job I had and in my college years; so i never really looked to find out. Now that it's time to shell out the money, I'm hoping maybe there's some other options out there, that might be a little cheaper.
All I really wanted my laptop for in the first place was for writing~ extras are nice, but I don't necessarily need the Excel, spreadsheets, etc that come with office- the word aspect of the program is what's pivotal to my needs.

Can anyone recommend some other types of software that work similarly to Word? Preferably with some modicum of a free trial; even if it's just a 24 hour one, so I have an idea of what i'd be getting before i pay for it? Obviously a free program would totally rock, but I'm not holding my breath on that, lol. I'm looking for a program I can use offline as well; I know there' probably sites you can use with that kind of thing, but I'm looking for something I type offline on and save as a document.
Lastly~ PLEASE only reply if you're familiar with the program~ I could do a google search myself and type a link and ad verbatim~ I'm looking for people who've at least tried or used the program in the past and know it's a legit one that's not full of viruses/spyware/etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer

If you are looking for something free and just as good, you should have a look at SSuite Office for a free word processor. It has almost all the features of Word, and looks and works the same. {except for the ribbons}. Their word processor is called WordGraph.

It is only 12 MB in size. Nice and small . Their software also doesn't need to run on Java or .NET, like MS Office and so many open source software, so it makes their software very small, efficient, and easy to use.
