Default Can anyone help with deleting Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac?

I followed the correct procedure to delete it, but when I went to empty the trash Microsoft AutoUpdate wouldn't be emptied from the trash because it is "in use" and it couldn't be opened because it is "incomplete or damaged." Other forums suggested opening AutoUpdate and switching from automatic updates to looking for them manually and then deleting. Since Office is deleted (I already emptied the rest of the trash) on my computer, I can't do that. Why didn't I get some kind of warning to switch to manual updates before the deletion process was complete, and, more importantly, how can I get Microsoft AutoUpdate off my computer? I am at my wit's end--please help!
