Default question about windows media player for computer whizzes!?

For some reason, whenever I play some movies that I have on my computer the sound on most of these files will not work. The files range from wmv, mpg, avi, and mp4. The formats of the films don't matter because some files from each format play. Also noticed that all the music I have (which is in mp3 format) is still playable and works fine in Windows Media Player. The problem is the movies worked before my brother downloaded the Quicktime Player application, and ever since then, this has been happening. So, I'm guessing that had something to do with it? Was wondering if any of you know whether this is a common problem and if the settings were just messed with when quicktime was downloaded. By the way, I had this issue before when I had XP about 5 months ago, I believe I tried uninstalling Quicktime but it didn't change anything until I installed Windows 7 on this comp and wiped everything.
