Default Windows Vista Being Slow and crashing while Transferring files?

I am trying to back up my files on my laptop, When I try to transfer even smaller files (500Mb) My computer goes really slow and then crashes and forces me to restart my computer. at first the file transfer goes to some speed and says it will take something like 19 hours to complete and then everything stops working... does anyone know how to fix this ?
