Default I installed an update for Windows Vista and now have no sound?

So I installed a bunch of the optional updates for Windows Vista, one being my sound driver, and now it will not work. I tried to do a system restore, but keep getting "unexpected errors" when trying to restore to before the update. I went to Microsoft's support website and tried everything listed including downloading their tool (which told me my sound was fine) but to no avail. (support website here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948481)

Does anyone have any suggestions or fixes for this issue?
