Default I reinstalled windows Vista but have no drivers for sound (or anything else).

Please help!!!!? A few years ago I lost my recovery disc for windows xp. My computer was crashing, so bought a Vista upgrade disc (w/SP1) to reinstall the operating system. Everything worked great and I had no problems for a couple years. Then, a year ago my wife's laptop was having problems, and I had found my xp recovery disc and decided to reinstall xp on my desktop, and then install the vista on the laptop. But for some reason xp wasn't installing completely (said it was missing key components to run xp), and the computer would just restart over and over (I tried reinstalling at least 5 times with same results). I then reinstalled Vista back onto the desktop, but on the first try had no sound (said there were no drivers found), and was also missing what seemed like all key drivers (couldn't seem to find them to download online either). I was told to reinstall it again, and sure enough, everything worked fine the 2nd try. Now I am trying to just reinstall vista again on the same computer (a clean version), and it is missing the drivers again, but I have tried it at least 5 times again w/same results (it gives 2 options, to upgrade and keep all current programs, or install a clean version and lose everything, but neither works). Has anyone ever had any of this happen? I need either Vista or Xp working for school. Any help would be a life saver!!
