Default On Windows Vista, how do you make a letter with an Umlaut?

I've tried using the keystrokes Alt 0235 to make an "e" with an Umlaut but it doesn't work. (If you could help me with that that would be awesome).

Is there any other way to do it besides going to character map?

When I do try the keystrokes I hold down the Alt key on the left side of the keyboard then press 0,2,3,5 one at a time, then let go of the Alt key.
