Default Ubuntu vs Windows xp?

I've got a netbook, and its on the slow side. I only use it for the net/email, I was wondering if Ubuntu would be faster than windows xp; or are there any other alternatives. I feel like the net goes slow on my netbook because windows has so much bs running, and would like to just have all my netbooks resources dedicated to surfing the net
I went through that test and got these suggestions, could anyone recommend the fastest of these: Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Opensusue, and Mandriva

Thumbs up Re: Ubuntu vs Windows xp?

Windows XP analyzed the performance impact of visual effects and uses this to determine whether to enable them, so as to prevent the new functionality from consuming excessive additional processing overhead. Users can further customize these settings. Some effects, such as alpha compositing (transparency and fading), are handled entirely by many newer video cards.

While Ubuntu offers significantly more functionality immediately upon installation than Windows does, the starkest point of comparison is price. XP Home Edition retails for $89.99 (USD). The Media Center Edition sells for $139.95 (USD). Ubuntu, on the other hand, remains free of charge.

Wink Re: Ubuntu vs Windows xp?

If only for net and email.........try Ubuntu. I am using it on an old Dell p3 and it is the fastest OS so far.
