If you are using any of the leading screen readers for Microsoft Windows, for example NVDA, JAWS, Window-eyes, or System2Go, in conjunction with Firefox 3.x or Internet Explorer 8.x, the following messages will be heard as you navigate through the search site:
- As you type in the search box, your screen reader will announce when Search Assist suggestions are available. Similarly, if no suggestions are provided, your screen reader will inform you of this as well.
- When you browse through the list of suggestions or related concepts with the Up and Down cursor arrows, your screen reader will announce every item you land on with the cursor. You can then press the ENTER key to start the new search with the selected search suggestion.
- When switching between Search Assist suggestions and the "Explore" related concepts columns with Left and Right arrows, your screen reader will inform you of the instructions describing the actions you can perform in each of the columns.
- When switching between the search box and the first search result (Web searches only) with Control+Shift+Up Arrow and Control+Shift+Down Arrow respectively, your screen reader will announce your location automatically.
- If the search result is in a language other than English, Yahoo! Search will instruct your screen reader to switch your speech synthesizer to that language.
